Newark, NJ – Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr., is urging members of the public to assist authorities in identifying a male suspect wanted in connection with a shooting that took place in the city’s West Ward earlier this month.

On Wednesday, April 9, 2025, at approximately 2:30 p.m., officers from the Newark Police Department responded to reports of gunfire in the 300 block of South 11th Street. Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered physical evidence of a shooting, including a spent shell casing on the sidewalk and a shattered window of a ground-floor apartment. Fortunately, no injuries have been reported, but the presence of gunfire in a residential neighborhood has raised community concern.

According to witness statements, the incident unfolded rapidly. Two males, reportedly riding electric bikes, were seen in the area moments before the shooting occurred. A confrontation ensued, during which a third male—believed to be the suspect—brandished a firearm and opened fire in the direction of the two individuals. After the shots were fired, the two targeted males reportedly abandoned their e-bikes, leapt over a fence, and fled through a backyard. The shooter also fled the scene shortly after.

Detectives from the Newark Police Department’s Shooting Response Team are leading the investigation and have released a photo of the suspect. He is described as a young adult male with a thin build and short braided hair. At the time of the incident, he was seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, gray and black Nike sweatpants, and black and gray sneakers.

Authorities are asking anyone who recognizes the suspect or has any information regarding his identity or whereabouts to come forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously, and all information will be kept confidential. Newark officials emphasize that even the smallest detail could prove vital in helping to identify and apprehend the suspect.

“This was a dangerous incident that could have resulted in serious injury or loss of life,” said Director Miranda. “We are thankful no one was physically harmed, but the threat to public safety remains. We are relying on our community to help us ensure accountability and prevent further violence.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Newark Police Division’s Crime Stoppers tip line or reach out directly to the department’s non-emergency number. Digital submissions can also be made through the Newark Department of Public Safety’s official website or mobile tip app.

Authorities continue to increase patrols and engage with residents in the area to ensure safety and to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future. The investigation remains ongoing.
