The suspect, 26-year-old Matyes Getachew, was pursued by law enforcement after allegedly committing a grand theft at a Target store in Camarillo. The incident began at approximately 10:00 a.m. on Friday when deputies from the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department responded to a report of a grand theft at the Target store located at 209 W. Ventura Blvd. in Camarillo. Getachew was accused of stealing merchandise valued at over $950, a crime classified as felony grand theft under California law. Upon noticing the deputies, Getachew fled the scene in a black Honda SUV.
As Getachew sped away, Ventura County deputies initiated a pursuit, following him as he drove through Ventura County and into Los Angeles County. At around 10:50 a.m., the California Highway Patrol (CHP) took over the chase as the suspect made his way onto the Ronald Reagan (118) Freeway in Granada Hills. CHP officers tracked Getachew’s movements both from the ground and via helicopter.
During the pursuit, CHP Officer Erik Larsen reported that Getachew was driving at dangerously high speeds, often exceeding 110 miles per hour. The suspect’s erratic driving, weaving in and out of lanes, created a significant hazard for other motorists. The chase continued as Getachew transitioned onto the eastbound Foothill (210) Freeway.
At around 11:00 a.m., the chase reached its tragic conclusion. Getachew’s vehicle collided with the rear right corner of an orange dump truck just west of the State Route 2 interchange. The violent impact caused severe damage to the left side of the SUV, scattering debris across the freeway. The crash brought the pursuit to a horrifying halt.
CHP officers were quick to respond to the scene and found Getachew unresponsive on the pavement near Ocean View Boulevard, where Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, and Montrose converge. Despite immediate efforts to perform CPR, Getachew was pronounced dead at 11:18 a.m. by Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics.
The fatal crash prompted the California Highway Patrol to issue a SigAlert at 11:32 a.m. for several eastbound lanes of the Foothill Freeway, as well as the transition lanes to the Glendale (2) Freeway. The investigation and cleanup efforts caused significant traffic delays, with lanes remaining closed for hours.
Investigators from the CHP’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team were dispatched to the scene to reconstruct the events leading to the crash.
