On September 17, 2019, the Hodgenville, Kentucky community was devastated by the sudden and tragic loss of 9-year-old Charlene “Charlie” Preslee-Kay Sipes. What began as a joyful celebration of her ninth birthday ended in heartbreak due to a freak bicycle accident near her home.

According to LaRue County Sheriff Russell McCoy, Charlie was riding her bicycle when she fell, and the handlebar brake struck her neck, severing an artery. Her mother, Tiffany Fischer, found her approximately 200 feet from their house and carried her back home, but Charlie was pronounced dead at the scene.

Charlie was a third-grade student at Abraham Lincoln Elementary School, where she was known for her charm and caring nature. Principal Crystal Wilkerson described her as a student who was loved by teachers and peers alike, stating, “This is a terrible loss for everyone who knew her” .
