Authorities are investigating the tragic death of a student at Oregon State University (OSU) after reports emerged of an apparent suicide on campus earlier today. The incident has shaken the university community in Corvallis, as students, faculty, and staff grapple with the devastating loss of one of their own.

According to the Corvallis Police Department, officers responded to a call involving a student in distress early Thursday morning. Despite emergency efforts, the student was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the student has not yet been released pending notification of family. While the investigation is ongoing, initial evidence suggests the death was the result of suicide.

Oregon State University officials have acknowledged the incident and extended heartfelt condolences to the student’s family, friends, and peers. In a statement released shortly after the incident, the university said it is working closely with law enforcement and will provide support to those affected.

“This is a deeply sad day for our university,” the statement read. “We grieve the loss of a member of our OSU community and extend our compassion and support to all those who are impacted.”

In response, OSU has mobilized its mental health and crisis response teams. Counseling and psychological services (CAPS) are being made available to students in need, and faculty and staff have been encouraged to reach out for support through the Employee Assistance Program. University officials are also reminding students of the resources available 24/7 through the crisis text line and other mental health hotlines.

The university is urging anyone struggling with mental health challenges to seek help, emphasizing that no one should suffer in silence. “You are not alone,” the university’s statement emphasized. “If you or someone you know is in crisis, there are people ready to listen and help.”

The student’s death has prompted renewed conversation about mental health on college campuses. Like many universities across the country, Oregon State has been working to address growing concerns around student well-being, stress, and isolation—issues that have only intensified in recent years.

Students gathered informally across campus today, grieving together and offering mutual support. Many expressed shock and sadness, noting that it’s difficult to fully understand what someone may be going through beneath the surface. Some students have already begun planning a vigil to honor the student’s memory and raise awareness about suicide prevention.

“This really hit close to home,” one OSU student said. “Even if you didn’t know the person, it’s heartbreaking. It reminds you how important it is to look out for each other and check in.”

As the investigation continues, OSU has pledged transparency and continued communication with the campus community. Police have stated that no foul play is suspected, and they are working to complete a full report in coordination with the Benton County Medical Examiner’s Office.

The tragedy serves as a solemn reminder of the critical importance of mental health care and compassionate community support. Oregon State University is encouraging anyone impacted by the event to reach out for help and to be mindful of the emotional toll such news can take.
