His contributions to both the financial world and higher education will be felt for generations to come.

Born and raised in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood, Malik Murray was shaped by the example set by his parents—his mother, a dedicated school principal, and his father, a respected judge. They instilled in him the values of education, discipline, and service to others. These foundational principles guided Malik throughout his life. A proud alumnus of DePaul University, he earned both his undergraduate degree in finance and an MBA from the institution. During his college years, he also made his mark on the basketball court as a four-year varsity athlete for the DePaul Blue Demons.

Professionally, Malik had a distinguished career in the financial industry. He joined Ariel Investments in 2004, a pioneering firm known as the nation’s oldest African American-owned investment management company. As head of business development and a member of the firm’s Operating Committee, Malik was instrumental in expanding Ariel’s institutional client base. Prior to his tenure at Ariel, he spent eight successful years at Bank One Brokerage, where he played a key leadership role in the international exchange-traded products group.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Malik was a tireless advocate for education and community engagement. He served on several influential boards, including those of St. Ignatius College Prep, Ariel Community Academy, and the National Association of Securities Professionals. At DePaul University, his service was profound and deeply valued—he was co-vice chair of the athletics committee and served on both the finance and investment committees. Malik also contributed his time and talents to the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce and the DePaul University Department of Finance Advisory Board.

Those who knew Malik describe him as a visionary leader, a generous mentor, and a compassionate friend. He had a profound ability to connect with people and was deeply committed to helping others succeed, particularly young professionals and students from underrepresented backgrounds. His work and passion inspired many, and his absence will be deeply felt.

Malik T. Murray’s passing is a significant loss, not only to his family and close friends but to the entire Chicago community and beyond.
