On Monday afternoon, the San Ramon Police Department responded swiftly to a reported threat of violence at California High School, prompting a “secure” status to be implemented across the campus while authorities investigated.
At approximately 12:26 p.m., the San Ramon Valley 911 Communications Center received a transferred call from a male caller who issued a threat directed at California High School, located at 9870 Broadmoor Drive in San Ramon. According to live updates posted on the San Ramon Police Department’s website, immediate action was taken to ensure the safety of students, staff, and visitors.
“Our School Resource Officer was on scene when the call was received and was almost immediately joined (by) multiple officers who took positions around campus to ensure the safety of all on site,” the department said in its update. Officers quickly coordinated a strategic response, positioning themselves throughout the campus to monitor for any suspicious activity while maintaining a protective presence.
By 12:40 p.m., school administrators made the decision to place the campus under “secure” status. Under a “secure” protocol, students and staff are required to remain inside their classrooms behind locked doors, while school activities continue as normally as possible. Unlike a full lockdown — which requires students and staff to stay quiet, out of sight, close blinds, and turn off lights — a “secure” status is considered a precautionary measure when a potential external threat exists but there is no immediate danger detected within the school itself.
To further assist in the search for any possible threats, police deployed drones to conduct aerial surveillance across the campus and surrounding areas. These drones provided real-time visuals to officers on the ground, allowing them to quickly assess any areas of concern without risking additional exposure.
By 1:25 p.m., the San Ramon Police Department reported that personnel had completed thorough searches of the campus, including all parking lots and nearby facilities. “Our Drone Team’s aerial searches have not found any suspicious individuals or situations that would indicate potential violence,” officials said. No weapons, dangerous objects, or suspicious individuals were located during the sweep.
After determining that there was no credible threat to student or staff safety, school administrators lifted the “secure” status, allowing campus operations to return to normal. Despite the clearance, San Ramon Police personnel announced that they would maintain a visible presence at California High School for the remainder of the school day as an added precaution and to reassure the school community.
Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains ongoing and are working to trace the origin of the threatening call. As of now, no arrests have been made, and no injuries were reported during the incident.
The San Ramon Police Department commended the quick actions of school administrators, staff, and students for following safety protocols and helping ensure a smooth and orderly response.
