BATON ROUGE, LA — A tragic incident unfolded late Monday night outside the Amazon Fulfillment Center located on Cortana Place, leaving one employee dead following a shooting during a shift break. The victim, identified as 23-year-old Dylan Anthony, was fatally shot in what authorities believe stemmed from a workplace dispute between two Amazon employees.
According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, the shooting occurred around 11:15 p.m., just minutes into the scheduled night shift break, which began at 11:00 p.m. Officers responded swiftly to reports of gunfire outside the facility and arrived to find Anthony suffering from multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot of the fulfillment center. Despite efforts by first responders, Anthony was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary investigations suggest the altercation began as a verbal disagreement between Anthony and another Amazon employee during the break period. Witnesses reported hearing raised voices before several shots rang out, sending employees scrambling for cover. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been officially released, reportedly fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Police cordoned off the facility’s parking lot through the early hours of Tuesday morning as investigators collected evidence and reviewed surveillance footage from the premises. The motive behind the disagreement has not yet been fully determined, but authorities believe it was a personal dispute that escalated into violence.
As of Tuesday afternoon, police confirmed they had identified a person of interest in the case and were working to locate the individual for questioning. No arrests had been made at the time of this report.
Amazon issued a statement early Tuesday expressing condolences to the victim’s family and stating the company was “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of one of our team members.” The company emphasized that it was fully cooperating with law enforcement during the ongoing investigation and would provide support to employees affected by the incident.
“We are heartbroken by the senseless act of violence that took the life of Dylan Anthony,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time.”
The fulfillment center remained closed for the remainder of the night shift, and grief counselors were made available on-site for employees seeking support. Many coworkers who spoke to local media described Anthony as a friendly and hard-working individual who had joined Amazon less than a year ago.
The tragedy has raised fresh concerns about workplace safety, particularly in high-pressure environments like fulfillment centers, where long hours and high demand can sometimes contribute to stressful working conditions. While Amazon has not reported a history of violence at this particular location, the company is now reviewing its on-site security protocols in light of the incident.
Local officials, including Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Weston Broome, expressed condolences and called for peace. “We are deeply saddened by the violence that took the life of a young member of our community. We must continue to work together to ensure our workplaces and neighborhoods are safe,” the mayor said in a statement.
The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Baton Rouge Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-STOP. Tips can be made anonymously and may be eligible for a cash reward.
As the Amazon community in Baton Rouge mourns the loss of Dylan Anthony, many are left grappling with how such a senseless act could occur in a place of work — and how to prevent future tragedies from happening again.
