Born Timothy William Dexter on April 29, 1957, in Mineola, New York, Treadwell developed a deep affection for animals early in life. After moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career, he faced personal challenges, including substance abuse. His transformative journey began in the late 1980s when he turned to the Alaskan wilderness, seeking solace and purpose among grizzly bears.
In 1990, Treadwell founded Grizzly People, an organization dedicated to the preservation of bears and their habitats. Through his extensive fieldwork, he documented bear behavior, amassing over 100 hours of footage that provided unique insights into these majestic creatures.
