JERSEY CITY, NJ — The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office has launched a full-scale investigation following a fatal shooting that took place Saturday afternoon in Jersey City. The incident, which shocked residents in the area, occurred around 4:10 p.m. near the intersection of Merritt Street and Old Bergen Road.

According to preliminary reports, officers from the Jersey City Police Department and emergency medical responders were initially dispatched to the scene after receiving calls about a vehicle crash. When they arrived, they discovered a car that had collided with a fence. Upon closer inspection, they found a man inside the vehicle suffering from a critical neck injury and heavy bleeding.

Authorities soon determined that the trauma was not caused by the crash itself, but rather by a gunshot wound. A single shell casing recovered at the scene confirmed that the victim had been shot before or during the incident, suggesting the crash may have been a direct consequence of the shooting.

The victim was immediately transported to Jersey City Medical Center, but despite the efforts of emergency staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival. The identity of the deceased has not yet been made public, pending notification of next of kin.

At this time, investigators do not believe any other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no additional injuries have been reported. The immediate area around the intersection was cordoned off for several hours as police conducted their initial investigation, collecting forensic evidence and canvassing the neighborhood for witnesses.

The motive behind the shooting remains unclear. The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit is actively investigating, and officials have appealed to the public for assistance. “We are urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, heard gunshots, or has relevant information to come forward,” said a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office. “Even the smallest detail could be critical to solving this case.”

Residents of the neighborhood, a typically quiet area of Jersey City, expressed alarm at the violence. “This is not something we see every day,” said one local who asked to remain anonymous. “It’s really unsettling to think something like this could happen in broad daylight, right in our community.”

As of now, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made. Authorities are reviewing nearby surveillance footage and continuing to interview potential witnesses in hopes of uncovering new leads.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to release more information as the investigation progresses.
