The people of Ireland are in mourning following the tragic death of Garda Kevin Flatley, who was killed on Sunday in a collision while on duty at a checkpoint in north Dublin.

The incident occurred shortly before 1 p.m. on the R132 at Lanestown when Garda Flatley was struck by a motorcycle. The motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was seriously injured and is currently receiving treatment at Beaumont Hospital.

Garda Flatley, 49, was a veteran member of An Garda Síochána with 26 years of dedicated service. Throughout his long career, he was a devoted public servant known for his unwavering commitment to keeping communities safe.

He was most recently serving with the Roads Policing Unit based out of Dublin Castle. His death marks the 90th time a garda has died in the line of duty in Ireland. President Michael D. Higgins led the tributes, offering condolences to Garda Flatley’s family and colleagues.

“Garda Flatley dedicated his career to public service and to keeping people safe,” said the President. “The loss of a Garda has a deep impact on society due to this strong connection.”

Garda Commissioner Drew Harris expressed profound sorrow at the loss, calling it “a terrible reminder of the dangers faced by gardaí every day.” He highlighted Kevin’s long-standing service and described him as a deeply valued member of the Garda family.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin and Tánaiste Simon Harris also extended their sympathies. Martin noted that the loss would be “keenly felt” both by those who knew Garda Flatley and throughout the country. Tánaiste Harris called him “a long-serving and much-respected member” of the Gardaí who died doing what he loved—protecting others.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan emphasized the risks officers like Garda Flatley face each day, putting the safety of others above their own. He said his death brings “heartbreak” to those who served with him and to all of Ireland.

The Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors (AGSI) issued a heartfelt statement, calling it a “devastating and dark day” for the Garda community. General Secretary Ronan Clogher said, “No Garda shift is ever routine, but this one has ended in the most horrendous of circumstances.”

AGSI President Declan Higgins assured that support will be extended to colleagues and family, and called on the public to assist Gardaí with any information relating to the incident.

Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald called the death “shocking and heartbreaking,” and offered her deepest sympathies to Flatley’s family, friends, and fellow officers. “This is an incredibly difficult time for them as they face this terrible loss,” she said.

The crash site has been sealed off for a full forensic and technical investigation. The Office of the State Pathologist and local coroner have been informed. Gardaí have issued an appeal for witnesses to come forward as the investigation continues.

As tributes pour in from across the country, Garda Kevin Flatley is remembered as a courageous and dedicated officer who gave his life in service to the people of Ireland. His passing serves as a poignant reminder of the daily sacrifices made by those in uniform.
