A heartbreaking tragedy unfolded Friday night when a 12-year-old girl, now identified as Emery Chalekian, was struck and killed in a crosswalk following a two-vehicle collision in Encinitas.

San Diego County Sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a pedestrian-involved collision just before 7 p.m. at the intersection of Encinitas Boulevard and Village Square Drive. According to investigators, a 44-year-old man driving a Nissan Xterra collided with a southbound Ford Fusion, also driven by a 44-year-old man. After the initial impact, the Nissan veered and struck Emery, who was walking in the crosswalk.

Despite the immediate emergency response, Emery tragically passed away before she could be transported to a hospital.

Both drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The incident is under active investigation by the North Coastal Station Traffic Investigators and the Sheriff’s Traffic Accident Reconstruction Team.
