The Black Hills region is mourning the loss of Eric Gardner, a trusted meteorologist, food and wine enthusiast, and treasured community member, who passed away unexpectedly on Monday evening. He was 60 years old.
For more than two decades, Eric was a familiar and comforting presence in homes across western South Dakota, serving as the morning and noon meteorologist at KOTA Territory News since December 2002.
With his calm demeanor, quick wit, and genuine warmth, Eric guided viewers through blizzards, sunny stretches, and everything in between. His ability to translate complex weather systems into accessible and reassuring forecasts earned him the respect and trust of thousands.
Before arriving in Rapid City, Eric built his career in broadcast meteorology through positions in Montana, Wyoming, and Texas, refining both his technical skill and his passion for connecting with audiences.
His love for the science of weather was evident in every broadcast, and his colleagues often noted how seriously he took the responsibility of keeping viewers informed and prepared.
But Eric Gardner was more than a weather anchor—he was a true local personality. Beyond the green screen, he was a celebrated figure in the regional culinary and wine scene.
Over the years, he hosted dozens of wine tastings, developed relationships with local chefs and vintners, and brought those stories to life through his regular food and wine segments on KOTA Territory News. His colleagues at KOTA Territory remembered him as a friend as much as a coworker—someone who was dependable, kind, and generous with his time and energy. “Eric was an amazing co-worker and a beloved part of the community here in the Black Hills,” the station shared in a statement. “We know Eric will be missed by all of you, as he will by all of us here.”
Off-air, Eric’s impact continued. He mentored younger journalists and meteorologists, supported local businesses, and never hesitated to lend his voice or platform to causes that mattered.
